In the summer of 2003, Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett joined forces on “It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere,” a boozy duet that would go on to become one of the greatest country music drinking songs of all time.
The island-inspired tune finds the superstars embracing a carefree lifestyle and acknowledging that it’s okay to drink at any time of the day because “It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere.”
“Pour me somethin’ tall and strong/ Make it a Hurricane before I go insane/ It’s only half past twelve, but I don’t care/ It’s five o’clock somewhere,” they sing on the chorus.
“It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere” was written by Jim “Moose” Brown and Don Rollins and spent a total of eight weeks at the top of the charts in the summer of 2003. The song went on to win the CMA Award for Vocal Event of the Year in 2003 and was named the No.3 country song of the decade by Billboard.
Following the song’s release, co-writer Jim “Moose” Brown revealed that they originally pitched the song to Kenny Chesney, however, he passed on recording it. Chesney’s loss was Jackson’s gain as it is now one of the biggest songs of his career.
“It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere” appears on Jackson‘s 2003 album, Greatest Hits II.
